Biography
Originally from Kuujjuaq and now based in Montreal, Niap is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores her identity as an Inuk woman and her deep connection to her homeland.
Sculpture, textiles, painting, installation, and performance: her work encompasses a wide variety of media, which she often combines using mixed media techniques. In particular, she incorporates beadwork, traditional motifs, anamorphosis, and the layering of textures to create works rooted in memory and cultural transmission.
Her creations address language, traditional knowledge, and personal narratives, while exploring how Inuit practices can be reinvented in a contemporary context. Deeply engaged in her community, she has long been an advocate for suicide prevention among Indigenous youth and is committed to preserving cultural practices such as throat singing.
Featured in several major institutions, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the McCord Museum, and the Canadian Museum of Nature, Niap’s works have been acquired by important public collections. Through an aesthetic that is both sensitive and assertive, she celebrates the strength, resilience, and modernity of Inuit identity.
