Biography

A Montreal-based artist whose practice is rooted in the “writing” style, an urban calligraphy movement that emerged on the U.S. East Coast in the late 1960s. Inspired by this tradition, yet seeking to transcend it, he offers a contemporary reinterpretation of graffiti, in which the letter becomes an autonomous form, sculpted by the textures, shadows, and lines that make up his works.

In his mural work, Stare is as interested in architectural structure as he is in the surrounding light. His compositions interact with the surfaces they inhabit, sometimes creating powerful contrasts, sometimes adopting a more harmonious and contextual approach. Public space—and the direct relationship between the artwork and passersby—is at the heart of his approach. His choice of materials and techniques always prioritizes durability and the artwork’s ability to age alongside its environment.

A pioneer of contemporary mural art in Montreal, he created his first large-scale work in 2007. In 2013, he presented his first solo exhibition, Star d’un soir, a tribute to the often ephemeral history of Montreal’s avant-garde public art. In his studio, he continues to explore the connection between art and urbanity by incorporating concrete, plaster, brick, and vegetation into his pieces, replicating the architectural elements that inspire his practice.
